Cannot Select Spotify In Alexa App

  1. The option to select Spotify for my echo dot is greyed out and cannot be selected even though I'm a premium user. Anyone having issues updating Alexa app?

When I try to set up Spotify in Amazon Alexa, it is disabled. I went to Settings Music & Media Choose Default Music Services. Spotify is there (see screenshot) but it is greyed out and cannot be selected. I have a premium account and I've tried solutions like logging in with my email instead of Facebook, etc etc.

However, Spotify only allows one user per Amazonaccount to use voice commands to play music. Spotify also advises Bose andSonos users to keep their devices updated with the latest firmware.

How to Connect Spotify to Alexa

To connect Spotify to Alexa, tap the three-baricon from the Alexa app then go to Settings > Music & Podcasts.Tap on the plus sign beside Link New Service and select Spotify.Tap on Enable to Use on the Skill page, then log in with your Spotifycredentials. On the Permissions page, tap Agree.

  1. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device. You can download the Alexa app on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
  2. Then tap the three-bar icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Next, select Settings.
  4. Then tap Music & Podcasts. Scroll down to the Alexa Preferences section. Music & Podcasts will be the third option in this section.
  5. Tap the plus sign beside Link New Service. You will see this option under the Services panel.
  6. Then select Spotify.
  7. Next, tap Enable to Use.

    Note: If you are not logged in to your Spotify account already, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. You can also choose to continue with your Facebook or Apple account. Then tap Log In.

  8. Finally, scroll down and tap Agree.

After you add Spotify, youcan try using Alexa to play music from Spotify or return to the Skill page andfollow the steps below to make Spotify your default music player.

How To Make Spotify Your Default Music Player on Alexa

To make Spotify your default music player onAlexa, open the Alexa app and tap the three-line icon in the top-left corner.Then go to Settings > Music & Podcasts > Default Services. Finally,tap Change, and select Spotify.

Note: You have to connect Alexa to Spotify beforeyou can make it your default music player.

  1. Tap the three-line icon in the top-left corner of the Alexa app. If you are continuing from the previous steps, you can find this by clicking the Home button in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Then go to Settings >Music & Podcasts.
  3. Next, tap Default Services. You will see this at the top of your screen.
  4. Then tap Change. You can choose to make Spotify your default music service for either Music, Artist and Genre Stations, and Podcasts or for all of them. By default, all three are set to Amazon Music. Tap Change to switch your desired service to Spotify.
  5. Finally, select Spotify to make it your default music player. The Spotify logo should now appear next to the type of music service you just changed.

You’re here because you can’t link your Spotify account to Alexa (Echo device). This applies to users who’re outside of the United States or where Amazon doesn’t have an official presence. Today you will learn how to link Spotify to Alexa and by the end of this guide, you will be able to ask Alexa to play your favourite music.

Note: To link Spotify to Alexa you must have a Spotify Premium account.

Problem

In the Alexa app, go to Menu button > Settings > Music > ‘CHOOSE DEFAULT MUSIC SERVICES’. What you will see is that the Spotify option is greyed out.

Solution

Step 1
i. Go to the Amazon website and log into your account. Scroll all the way down.
ii. Under Let Us Help You, select ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’.

Step 2
i. Click on the ‘Preferences’ tab and expand Country/Region Settings. For this example you will see that it is set to Malaysia where I’m located. We need to change it to an address in the United States.
ii. Click ‘Change’.

Step 3
i. Key in an address which is located in the United States. Don’t worry as this address won’t interfere with your delivery address nor the location that you set in the Alexa app.

ii. Once the address is updated, you will see that the country has been updated to ‘United States’.

Step 4
i. Clear all the apps from the multi-tasker on your phone. Or you can just restart your phone.
ii. Launch the Alexa app again and go to the music settings. You should now see the list like below.

Step 5
i. We need to sign in to Spotify. Tap on ‘Link account on Spotify.com’.
ii. This will bring you to the Spotify page. Log in with your Spotify username and password.

Step 6
i. After logging in successfully there will be a prompt to connect Alexa to your Spotify account. Tap on ‘Okay’.
ii. Your Spotify account has been linked successfully.

Step 7
i. Congratulations, you’re almost done!
ii. Go back to the Music settings and select Spotify as the default music service.

iii. Go to your Echo device and test it. Say something like “Alexa, play songs by John Mayer on Spotify”.

Still not working? Try unlinking and linking it again.

Readers have pointed out in the comments section that their linkage between Spotify and Alexa suddenly stopped working. This is even after going through the steps in this article.

To resolve this, your Spotify account needs to be unlinked and linked back again to Alexa. Follow the steps below.
